St. John’s Prep’s (1-0) sixth-inning rally was enough to avoid the loss on home turf, beating St. John’s 5-4. The Eagles got into an early hole finding themselves down 3-0 after the first inning. The Pioneers added another run in the top of the third inning thanks to an Andrew Schmit RBI single.  

In the bottom of the sixth inning, St. John’s Prep loaded the bases after a James Willett single. Then it was Gavin Gold who ripped a two-run double to left field to cut the lead in half (4-2). 

Still, in the sixth inning, Jack DiFilippo doubled to bring two runs in to tie the game at four. Prep took the lead a few batters later when pinch hitter Tyler Spear (first varsity at-bat)singled to left field bringing in Christian Rosa to give the Eagles a 5-4 lead. 

Now with a one-run lead going into the final inning, Braeden Hurley gets a 1-2-3 inning to earn the Eagles their Opening Day win. 

BASEBALL

St. Mary’s 2

Archbishop Williams 0

The Spartans (2-0) went into enemy territory and came home with a shutout victory. 

Jack Zimmerman picked up his first win going five innings with nine strikeouts. 

Michael Demaino (2-for-4), Jaiden Driscoll (2-for-3), and Jared Paone (double) all led the offense for St. Mary’s. 

Marblehead 4

Manchester-Essex 2

The Magicians scored four runs in the fifth inning to get past Manchester-Essex. 

Marblehead got on the board when freshman Greyson Leventhal, hit a sac-fly to drive in sophomore Graham Tips. Then it was Charlie Sachs who brought in a run through an RBI single. 

With his second hit of the game, senior Chris Cannuscio had a two-RBI single to bring home the third and fourth run of the inning. 

In the seventh inning, with bases loaded and two outs, Magicians pitcher Brooks Keefe struck out the final batter to earn the save. 

Cannuscio went five innings and struck out four batters to pick up the win. 

Saugus 6

Northeast Metro 3

The Sachems defeated Northeast Metro on home soil. In the third inning, Saugus opened up the scoring thanks to a Shane Bourque double which brought in three runs. 

In the same inning, Danny Zeitz recorded a two-RBI single to give the Sachems a big lead. 

Jordan Rodriguez was on the mound for Saugus. Rodriguez struck out six batters and only walked three. 

Bishop Feehan 8

Bishop Fenwick 3

Feehan got the road victory over Fenwick in a Catholic Central League showdown. 

The Shamrocks got a much-needed win after dropping their last game to Attleboro 3-0 over the weekend. 

Rockport 12

It was a tough loss for the Panthers against a talented Rockport squad. 

Chanel Gutierrez recorded three stolen bases for KIPP. 

SOFTBALL

Peabody 4

Peabody’s Abby Bettencourt (8 strikeouts and 1 earned run) had a complete game on the mound and went 2-for-4 at the plate with two doubles and two runs scored. 

Senior Logan Lomasney went 1-for-4 with two-RBIs, while freshman catcher Kaylee DiNicola had a clutch two-out two-RBI double late in the game to seal the win for the Tanners. 

Marblehead 9

Reading 3

Behind Tessa Francis’ 12 strikeout performance the Magicians opened up the season with a win. Francis allowed just two hits. 

Triton 6

Lynnfield 4

The Pioneers went down 6-0 after four innings but couldn’t complete the comeback. Lynnfield scored two runs in the sixth and seventh innings but the early deficit was too much to overcome. 

“We struggled early defensively, four errors led to a 6-0 Triton lead,” Lynnfield coach Hector Longo said. 

Lynnfield’s Morgan Hubbard recorded two-RBI triples in the game and also scored two runs. 

Triton’s reigning CAL MVP, Emma Penniman, registered 11 strikeouts in the win. Penniman allowed just four hits. 

Bishop Feehan 1

Bishop Fenwick 0

A game between two of the best teams in the area needed extra innings on Monday. An excellent pitching duel saw the teams remain scoreless until the bottom of the ninth inning. 

Feehan’s Oliva Abren hit a walk-off double to beat the Crusaders. 

Mylee Ramer went the full nine innings to earn the win and the shutout. 

Archbishop Williams 3

St. Mary’s 0

The Spartans (0-1) dropped their opening game of the season against Archbishop Williams. Despite the loss, the Spartans got a good pitching display from freshman Aliza Crean-Oviedo. 
St. Mary’s will look to bounce back Wednesday when it travels to Bishop Fenwick at 3:30 p.m. 

VOLLEYBALL

Lynn Classical 3

Everett 2

The Lynn Classical Rams got off to a quick start against Everett winning the first two sets (25-18; 16-24). However, Everett struck back, winning the next two sets to set up a fifth set. 

The Rams, in a close set, edged Everett 15-13 to move to 3-0 on the season. 

Sophomore setter, Kenzel Lantano, registered 31 assists, five aces, three kills, and six digs. Outside hitter Viet Tran had 17 kills and 12 digs to help Classical remain unbeaten. 

Lynn Classical’s next game is on Wednesday when it hosts Malden at 5:15 p.m. 

BC High 3

St. John’s Prep 1

St. John’s Prep welcomed BC High to Danvers, but it was BC High who went home with the victory (20-25, 25-23, 22-25, 25-27). 

The Eagles were led by George Dauphin who recorded 13 digs and Jayden Pelletier who finished with 20 kills.

Beverly 5

This game was a defensive showdown with neither team giving away clean shots from start to finish. The teams went into halftime tied 3-3. 

Both teams scored in the third quarter to make it 4-4. In the fourth quarter, the Magicians made sure they weren’t going to lose on home turf putting two goals past the Beverly goalie to win the game 6-5. 

Swampscott 8

Winthrop 5

Despite a close first half, Swampscott dealt with the Vikings. Winthrop led 3-2 at halftime, but in the second half, it was all Swampscott. 

The Big Blue scored six goals in the third quarter to lead 8-4 going into the fourth quarter. Then in the fourth quarter, they focused on the defensive end securing the win 8-5.

It was a tough afternoon for the Spartans (1-2). Finn Racki scored two goals for St. Mary’s. 

GIRLS LACROSSE

Beverly 17

Marblehead 9

The Magicians (0-2) went on the road to face the Panthers on Monday evening. Marblehead found themselves in an early hole trailing 11-4 at halftime with Ramona Gillett scoring three of the Magicians four goals. 

Marblehead came out of halftime on fire scoring three successive goals to cut the lead to four (11-7). Unfortunately for Marblehead, Beverly responded with a run of its own, scoring four straight to take a 15-7 advantage to end the third quarter. 

For the Panthers Lily Shea scored eight goals and one assist on the day. Shea also eclipsed 200 career points. Magicians were led by Gillett (3 goals), Maddie Forbes (1 assist and 2 goals), and Kathryn Commoss (2 goals). Gretchen Smith and Caitlin Ryan both netted for the Magicians. Molly Bullard made nine saves. 

Swampscott 16

Winthrop 1

The Big Blue (3-0) girls lacrosse team continues to remain unbeaten early in the season. 

Coco Clopton, with four goals and two assists, surpassed the 200 career point mark for Swampscott (currently at 207). Victoria Pierro,  Sophia Ciciotti, Avery Laundry, Cecilia Tripp, and Mia Dahlman all registered braces in the win. Fiona Keaney and 

Samantha Demady each got on the scoreboard with a goal each. 

Goalie Lilah Caplan recorded four saves. 

Swampscott will look to remain unbeaten when it travels to Marblehead on Thursday. 

Saugus 9

Gloucester 4

The Sachems keep on winning this time, defeating Northeastern Conference rival Gloucester by five goals. 

Juliana Scalis registered a hat trick, while Nina Penachio recorded three points (2 goals and 1 assist) for Saugus.  Jessica Valley, Ashley Rezendes, Mara Faiella, and Natalie Justice all scored a goal each in the win. 

Lynnfield 18

Wilmington 9

The Pioneers scored five unanswered goals in the second quarter to lead 9-5. Then Lynnfield increased its lead to six (14-8) in the third quarter, before holding Wilmington to just one fourth-quarter goal to seal the victory. 

Lynnfield is back in action on Tuesday when it travels to Triton for a 4 p.m. game. 

BOYS TENNIS

Marblehead 5

Beverly 0

It was a great team effort for the Magicians as they swept the Panthers. First singles Mika Garber beat Liam Timpone 6-0, 6-0. 

Second singles Etan Farfel won his match 6-1, 6-1, while third singles sophomore, TJ Kelley, won 6-0, 6-1. 
Juniors Jayden Janock and Junior Leo showed their chemistry on the court winning their doubles matchup 6-2, 6-0. Anthony Vizy and Alex Boehning (varsity debut) beat Harrison Finamore and Logan Hall 6-3, 6-1. 

Swampscott 4

It was a great start to the season for the Big Blue winning its opening match against Manchester-Essex. 

First singles, Charles Schepen, won his match 6-3, 6-2. Second singles, Sam Schepens, rebounded after dropping the first set to win his match in three (4-6, 6-2, 6-0). 

Swampscott’s double teams both won with  Nick Custer and Trevor Talebian only dropping one game (6-1, 6-0), and Lucas Beread and Julian Flake edging a tight match 6-3, 6-4. 

Lowell Catholic 4

St. Mary’s 1

Stephen Nason (6-0, 6-2) was the sole winner for St. Mary’s on a day for the team. Thomas Shea (6-8, 3-6) played well in first singles despite the loss. 

GIRLS TENNIS

Swampscott 3

Pentucket 2

The Big Blue earned a close win over Pentucket. First singles Anna Eccles won her matchup  6-1, 6-3. Second singles, Sydney Antonelli, lost in a third set tiebreaker 10-7. 

Doubles partnership Victoria Quagrello and Noelle Diehl won their respective match  6-4, 6-3 and Ava and Alexia O‘Donnell won their match 6-3, 6-1 to clinch the win for Swampscott. 

Danvers 5

Saugus 0

It was a tough day for the Sachems getting swept by the Falcons. 

Saugus will look to get back on track against Winthrop on Wednesday.

In a tightly contested matchup, it was the Hornets who protected home court. 

Bishop Fenwick has a quick turnaround as it hosts Bishop Stang on Tuesday at 4 p.m. ‘

In a game that could have gone either way, St. Mary’s was on the wrong side of the result. Riley Maguire and Anna Wood won their respective singles matches. 

Both doubles teams went to extra sets, and unfortunately, both lost in the tiebreakers. 

Beverly 3

Marblehead 2

In a Northeastern Conference matchup, it was Beverly prevailing over Marblehead. Beverly’s first and second singles defeated Marblehead, but Magicians third singles Sami Dosch defeated Grace Adams 6-3, 6-3. 

Then Marblehead’s first doubles Aoife Bresnahan and Lucia Levin won 6-2, 6-1 to tie the match. 

Unfortunately for Marblehead, Beverly’s second doubles outmatched the Magicians taking home the win. 

“Kudos to Beverly’s tennis program. It has come a long way, I have seen vast improvements with their players,” Magicians coach Tracy Ackerman said. “ It has been a rougher than usual start for us, but we know we have work to do and will make improvements and come back stronger. A bright light for us continues to be third singles Sami Dosch, who is frustrating her opponents with her backboard style of play.” 

Peabody 5

The Tanners opened their season with a win and a sweep on Monday. 

First singles Jessica Chau won her match 6-3, 6-3. 

Meanwhile second singles Yasmine Giacalone “delivered a mixture of high-quality tennis shots and controlled serves in a very competitive match,” according to coach John Sousa. Giacalone won her match 6-2, 6-2. 

Third singles Vanessa Kola won her matchup 6-0, 6-2.

Jill McGrath and Theodosia Kourtelidis showed why they are a tough doubles team to beat winning 6-2, 6-2, while second doubles Argiro Psyhogios and Tori McCoy won their respective match 6-2, 6-2.
