ROUNDUP: Strong third inning does it for English
Press Releases

Seven Lynn English batters went home with hits, and its baseball team quadrupled host Everett, 8-2, Wednesday afternoon. Better yet, coach Esteban Paula’s Bulldogs received strong pitching from Alijah Wallace, who allowed just one run across six innings to go with eight strikeouts.

A scoreless game heading into the third, English put up six runs in the inning to put the pressure on. The main highlight was Gilbert Galva’s double, which plated three runs.

Galva (2 stolen bases) and Kenry Manzanillo each drove in three to lead the English offense, which looks to keep its rhythm intact against traditional archrival Lynn Classical on Monday. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. at Fraser Field.

BASEBALL

St. Mary’s 5
Bishop Fenwick 0

Talk about defending a home diamond. The Spartans took care of Bishop Fenwick, 5-0, at Fraser Field behind a combined one-hitter from pitchers Matt Lewis (3 strikeouts) and Josh Doney (6). Carrying the offensive load was Jaiden Driscoll, who finished 1-for-2 with a run and two RBI.

Peabody 6
Marblehead 3

A pitch count limit (116) prevented a complete game from Peabody’s Cam Connolly, but he tossed 6 2/3 innings in the Tanners’ 6-3 win against Marblehead. He allowed just four hits and punched out 11 Magicians.

Noah Crocker was 2-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI, while Josh Sigmon went 1-for-3 with a pair of RBI for coach Mark Bettencourt’s Tanners.

Xaverian 5
St. John’s Prep 2

Xaverian stole one on the road against The Prep (1-1), which suffered a 5-2 loss on Wednesday. Tyler Spear had two hits in defeat, while Will Shaheen picked up an RBI to lead the Eagles’ offense.

Masconomet 3
Saugus 0

In the end, Saugus was “just outplayed,” according to coach Joe Luis. Despite the loss, Cam Soroko put on a show on the bump. He punched out 10 batters, allowing just one walk and four hits across six innings.

The Sachems went home with just one hit – that came from Nate Soroko, who went 1-for-3 on the evening.

Swampscott 8
Gloucester 3

Sophomore Jack Spear earned the win for Swampscott, going five innings and sporting four strikeouts and just one earned run. Quinn Fitzpatrick entered in relief, continuing Spear’s momentum with three strikeouts and two hits allowed.

Offensively, Caden Ross had two hits, two walks, and three RBI, while Michael Collins registered a two-run single. Nick Berube chipped in with two hits and an RBI.

Swampscott upped its record to 2-1 before Friday’s visit to Winthrop.

SOFTBALL

Everett 7
Lynn English 6

Close, but Everett escaped English’s grasp with a 7-6 victory in Lynn. The victors doubled the Bulldogs in hits, 6-3, and scored four runs across the final two innings to win it.

For English, which suffered from six errors compared to Everett’s zero, hits belonged to Kate Johansson, Ariana Reynoso, and Arianna Laboy.

Lynn Classical 16
Malden 2

The Lady Rams (1-1) secured their first win of the season in big fashion, taking care of Malden in enemy territory. Sophomore Aysia Oleas went 2-for-4 with three RBI, also pitching two innings and recording three punchouts.

Nevaeh Eth crushed a triple and double, scored a pair of runs, and had an RBI, while Aliany Ramirez (RBI) connected on her first varsity hit.

Newburyport 9
Lynnfield 6

The Lynnfield offense was present and accounted for, but the Pioneers (1-2) struggled elsewhere en route to a 9-6 loss against the Clippers at home. Morgan Hubbard had two hits and drove in a pair, while Ava Gamache, Kaila George, and Libby Considine all had key hits for the Pioneers, according to coach Hector Longo.

Danvers 11
Saugus 4

Saugus (0-2) coach Steve Almquist said “The game was closer than the final score would indicate.” His Sachems trailed by just one run heading into the fifth inning, but that’s when the Falcons took over.

Sydney Deleidi (1-for-2, run), her sister, Taylor (3-for-4, RBI), Lily Ventre (2-for-4, 2 RBI), Paige Hogan (2-for-2, run), and Felicia Alexander (1-for-2, run) led the offensive charge for Saugus.

“Despite the loss, there were a ton of positives to take away and I was extremely pleased with the kids’ effort and performances today,” Almquist said.

Marblehead 4
Gloucester 2

If you ask Marblehead coach Johnny Gold, “The story was catcher Luka Bornhorst.” All she did was throw a runner out while hitting a two-run triple in the fifth inning.

It was a team effort, however. Tessa Andriano knocked in two runs with a double for the Magicians (3-0), who host Ipswich on Friday.

BOYS LACROSSE

Swampscott 14
Saugus 3

Big Blue, big-time victory against the Sachems. A seven-goal second quarter catapulted Swampscott to a 14-3 win on Wednesday. Jason Rothwell led the way with four goals and three helpers, while Liam Keanet, John Von Barta, and Max Field netted two goals apiece.

Bishop Fenwick 14
St. Mary’s 5

St. Mary’s hit the road on Wednesday, but returned empty-handed from Peabody in a nine-goal loss to the Crusaders. Evan Toto did deliver, however, with a hat trick for the Spartans.

GIRLS LACROSSE

Bishop Fenwick 12
St. Mary’s 8

Despite an eight-goal performance from Ava Nason of the Spartans, her star performance wasn’t quite enough against the Crusaders at Manning Field.

BOYS TENNIS

Marblehead 3
Swampscott 2

Despite two doubles losses, a singles sweep lifted the Magicians to a 3-2 victory over host Swampscott. Mika Garber, Etan Farfel, and Jayden Janock (singles debut) were victorious.

“It was a nail-biter until the end. Both first and second singles lost their respective first sets, but came through, winning their third sets decisively,” said Marblehead coach Elisabeth Foukal. “Good sportsmanship was displayed on all the courts and it was an excellent match.”

Lynnfield 5
Ipswich 0

In a near-perfect afternoon for Joe Dunn’s Lynnfield Pioneers, they swept Ipswich in enemy territory. Dan Levin, Shea McCarthy, and Shlok Kudrimoti earned singles wins, while the combinations of Brendan Sokop-Slate LoPilato and Russell Kasdon-Raffi Arkun got the job done in doubles.

GIRLS TENNIS

Marblehead 5
Swampscott 0

Marblehead – dropping no sets – got its first Northeastern Conference win with Swampscott in town. Maddie Conlon, Aviva Bornstein, and Sami Dosch were victorious in singles, while the doubles duos of Aoife Bresnahan-Lucia Levin and Lani Gilmore-Nina Johnson got the job done in doubles.

“Today was a great NEC win for us,” said Marblehead coach Tracy Ackerman. “Frankly, we were all really disappointed with our loss to Beverly this week – that loss really stung. The girls really focused on practice and made less unforced errors than the previous match against Beverly. Sometimes, it takes a bad loss to get motivated, and that is what happened to us this week.”

Lynnfield 4
Ipswich 1

Second match, first win for the Pioneers as they defeated Ipswich, 4-1, on home courts. Paige Martino, Lily Alves, and Maddie Sieve were perfect in singles play, while Vicky McCrann and Emma Wagon sported a doubles victory.

TRACK AND FIELD

In its first meet of the spring, Lynn Tech’s track and field team got the job done – and then some – against Innovation. The boys won, 74-62, while the girls did so, 92-41.

Bryton Osgood, Cesar Reyes, Diego Castro, Dereon Phipps, and Joshua Lewis went home with first-place finishes in their respective events, while on the girls’ side, Jirelis De Jesus, Ferlande Jean Jacques, Faith Akinbani, Kassandra Pena, Eimy Troncoso, Emily De Jesus, and Isabella Cortez also snagged first-place honors.

As for Lynnfield, its boys team (1-0) picked up a 93-52 win against Ipswich. The following individuals all won their events: Eli Mendese, Jared Bernabei, Quinn Hardisty, Nick Kelter, Ryan Nguyen, Zahir Mitchell, Srivanth Tudi.
